ALEJANDRO RUEDA

Policy Director, American Chamber of Commerce in Spain

Thank you Global Ties Idaho, for the unique visit that I had in October 2018 visiting Boise as part of my IVLP program! All the people involved (team and guests) were extraordinarily kind and gave us a broader vision of the American economy and society that enriched our experience. We discovered the importance of the US primary sector and all the innovation generated in the farms and the local corporations. The visit to the university and the opportunity to talk to professors and the teachers about international trade and globalization were vital when international treaties were on the political table. I also keep an extraordinary memory of our dinner with a Boisean family and their heartwarming hospitality.

My IVLP experience was great, visiting five different states and cities, but I will always remember Idaho’s beauty and its people’s kindness as the best part of my visit to the US.

Meeting with smart, curious, high-minded innovators from Japan, India, and other Asian nations has helped me understand more about the world as well as about our interconnectedness. I learned about Japanese efforts to improve the status of immigrants there; men in Bangladesh supporting women in STEM fields, and Indian and Pakistani entrepreneurs collaborating across borders. I’ve been able to laugh, eat, talk, and even dance (!) with people from different cultures, and it fills me with joy. We sometimes bumble our way through communication, but it’s always with the most earnest desire to understand.

It has been an honor to meet and host leaders from all over the world. Global Ties creates the space for us to engage and share our values, culture, and ideas. The experience, although short, allows us to share and see the humanness of each other, bridging gaps between truth and myth that may exist across cultures. I will never forget a recent conversation on zoom where we had a deep discussion about the role of women in government and how reforms are occurring worldwide to increase opportunities for women in elected roles. Our conversation was exhilarating; it reminded me of the vast world beyond Idaho borders and increased my understanding and awareness of how much we have in common across cultures. There is so much energy and potential to make positive change when we communicate across artificial borders. This program ties us together and provides an invaluable opportunity to see the connections and the common values we share.
