About Us

Since 2005, Global Ties Idaho has been hosting leaders from the international community, showcasing Idaho as a prominent location in the U.S. We are part of a larger network of the International Visitor Leadership Program, (IVLP), Global Ties U.S., sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. Global Ties U.S. is a coalition of over 80+ individual nonprofits, dedicated to the shared goal of showcasing the U.S. to the international community.

Our mission is to promote mutual understanding and respect between the people of the U.S., our citizens in the State of Idaho, and our visitors from other nations around the world by offering current and emerging international leaders the opportunity to experience the richness and diversity of America while Idaho likewise benefits from the opportunity to absorb culture from our visitors. Our program designs short-term professional and cultural exchange programs for current and emerging leaders, specialists, and scholars from around the globe.

History of Global Ties Idaho
A NON-PROFIT DEDICATED TO ENRICHING LIVES OF LOCALS AND
INTERNATIONAL VISITORS

In 2005 Carole Schroeder was representing Boise State University at a history conference in Tennessee when the Executive Director of the Arkansas Council for International Visitors told her that Idaho was one of only three states in the U.S. without a Council for International Visitors. He encouraged her to start a nonprofit council for international visitors.

The International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) is the U.S. Department of State’s premier professional exchange program. Through short-term visits to the United States, current and emerging foreign leaders in a variety of fields experience this country firsthand and cultivate lasting relationships with their American counterparts. Professional meetings reflect the participants’ professional interests and support the foreign policy goals of the United States.  In existence since 1940, every year U.S. Ambassadors vote the IVLP as the most influential program offered by the U.S. https://eca.state.gov/ivlp

Staff at U.S. Embassies nominate promising leaders for programs of up to three weeks.  Each year, the U.S. Department of State brings up to 5,000 international visitors to the U.S. and works with several National Program Agencies and Global Ties U.S. (www.globaltiesus.org), comprising of 80+ community-based Councils such as in Idaho, to organize their visit.  Global Ties Idaho is the only Council member of Global Ties U.S. in the State of Idaho.
